7 Common Mistakes in the Boating Theory Exam — and How to Pass First Time

1. Memorising Q&A only. Question wording changes — those who didn't understand the material fall on rephrased questions, especially in the oral theory check at the practical stage.
2. Underestimating rules-of-the-road questions. Right of way, vessel lights and markings — the heart of the exam and exactly what saves you at sea.
3. Mixing up port and starboard lights. Red = port (left), green = starboard (right). Drill it until automatic.
4. Not practising under exam conditions. 30 questions straight with a clock is different from the sofa.
5. Leaving the exam for "someday". Book a date — it creates discipline.
6. Studying from outdated sources. Old booklets contain questions no longer in the pool.
