What to Wear and Bring to Your First Sailing Lesson

The exact packing list for day one of a boating course: what's essential, what's unnecessary, and the classic shoe mistake every new student makes.

Signed up and your first practical lesson is tomorrow? Good news: we provide all the safety gear and instruments. Here's what's on you:

The list

  • Comfortable layered clothing — even on a hot day, the sea breeze is cooler than shore.
  • Closed shoes with light, non-slip soles — the classic mistake: flip-flops. Wet deck + flip-flops = slipping. Simple sneakers win.
  • A hat that stays on — the sea wind takes loose hats without asking.
  • Sunscreen — the sea reflects the sun back at you, even on cloudy days.
  • Sunglasses — preferably with a strap.
  • A water bottle — you dehydrate fast on the water.
  • Swimsuit and towel — you don't always get wet, but better to have.

What to leave home

Expensive jewellery, non-waterproof watches and heavy bags. Keep your phone in a waterproof pouch or zipped pocket — the sea collects a phone tax every year.

And seasickness?

Most people adjust quickly, especially close to shore. If you're sensitive — a seasickness tablet half an hour before boarding does the job, and eat something light beforehand (an empty stomach makes it worse).
